In August, 2005 Hurricane Katrina devastated more than a million families along the Gulf Coast. In an instant, their homes disappeared with belongings both swimming in water and scattered for miles.
I traveled to New Orleans to help with aid and document the recovery efforts through photography. I saw first-hand the grief of so many, whose lives were turned upside down by that great storm.
Every family I helped desperately searched for just two things among the wreckage of their homes: heirlooms and family photos.
From natural disasters, to the 30 seconds between kindergarten and high school graduation, the truth is that life happens way too fast. The moments we thought we’d never forget become a distant memory at best. And the photos we took (even when we didn’t fit into our skinny jeans) are the things we hold closest when the dust settles.

Are Professional Photos Better Worth It??

We’ve all seen the iPhone ad where you pull up portrait mode and suddenly you’re you’re a professional. iPhones are great and they have their purpose (I take photos with mine every day too!), but an iPhone doesn’t replace a professional camera. If you’re wanting a photo for anything more than Instagram, it’s worth it to use professional equipment. A camera with a full-frame sensor is noticeably better for images that are enlarged or printed in a photo album since there are significantly more pixels per inch, giving clarity in prints ranging from a 4x6 to 20x30 and beyond.

I could sit in a nice car, but if it’s a stick shift I’m toast. Having a nice camera is similar. Your sister may have watched a few YouTube videos and picked up some things, but I have a degree in photography and fine arts with a couple of decades of experience. I learned to shoot with film and have carried the technical skills of film and understanding of lighting into digital photography. I’ve been working in Photoshop for decades honing my craft.
My years of experience (and learning from mistakes!) coupled with professional equipment and editing software are sure to give a final product you will love and confidently display on your wall.

Hats off to your cousin, I’ll bet he’s crushing it at landscape photography. I’m sure you’d agree that mountains and people are just a little different. The truth is, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all photographer.
A wedding indoors, outdoors, at noon and at dusk all require different techniques. I’ve photographed them all, and have no doubt I can deliver the wedding photos of your dream no matter the circumstances.

I’m a mom, so trust me when I say - I get it. Although it might be tough to get everyone in coordinating clothes and out the door without a fight, or to get Grandpa to wear anything but that darn Broncos hat for an hour, the effort will be worth the reward.
We all have to make time for what’s important, and your kids will be off to college before you know it. Feel free to show up to a shoot a little grumpy. We’ll still get a wall-worthy shot. I promise.
